Why Most Brands Waste 40% of Their Ad Spend

Every quarter, we audit new clients ad accounts. The pattern is always the same: roughly 40% of their budget is going to campaigns that have not converted in months. Nobody turned them off. Nobody questioned the strategy. The agency just kept billing.

The Three Places Budget Goes to Die

After auditing over 200 ad accounts across Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, we have identified three consistent patterns that drain budgets without delivering results.

1. Broad match keywords with no negative list

This is the most common offender. Broad match can work, but only with an aggressive negative keyword strategy that gets refined weekly. Most accounts we inherit have fewer than 20 negatives. The good ones have 500+.

The fix is not to abandon broad match. It is to pair it with tight monitoring and weekly search term reviews. We build automated alerts that flag any search term spending more than $50 without a conversion.

2. Retargeting audiences that never refresh

Retargeting is powerful when the audience is fresh. But most accounts are still serving ads to people who visited the site 180 days ago. That is not retargeting. That is stalking someone who already forgot about you.

We cap retargeting windows at 14 days for most B2B and 30 days for e-commerce. Beyond that, the data shows diminishing returns that approach zero.

3. Creative fatigue nobody is measuring

Ad creative has a shelf life. For Meta, it is typically 2-3 weeks before frequency kills performance. For LinkedIn, it is longer, maybe 4-6 weeks. But most accounts run the same creative for months.

We track creative fatigue through a combination of frequency caps, CTR decay curves, and cost-per-result trends. When any of these signals fire, we rotate.

The Compound Effect of Waste

Here is what makes ad waste particularly damaging: it is not just the money you lose. It is the data you corrupt. When 40% of your budget feeds bad campaigns, your attribution models learn the wrong lessons. Your audience signals get diluted. Your optimization algorithms chase the wrong conversions.

Clean up the waste, and you do not just save money. You make every remaining dollar smarter.

What We Do Differently

At Axiom, every client gets a full account audit in week one. We identify waste, pause what is not working, and reallocate budget to what is. Most clients see a 20-30% efficiency gain in the first 30 days, not from spending more, but from spending better.

If you are curious about where your budget is actually going, let us talk. The audit is free. The insights usually pay for themselves.
